Extending the display of material balance

Answer

Underneath the notation window there is the display of the material balance which you will know from previous versions or from Fritz. In the bar with the small symbols representing the pieces you can see at a glance the distribution of material between the two sides.

Tip: It is important to understand this display: the bar does not show the pieces which have been taken, but only the difference in material between the two sides. In the example we have shown it can be seen that White only has a rook whereas Black has his queen.

If you click on the first move of the game notation the program will display in the same area of the window the name of the opening.

That is another difference from the previous versions. In them the opening classification was not displayed until enough moves had been played to correctly identify it. So if you want to see the opening played in a game all you have to do is click on the first move of the game notation.

In addition, in this window you can also access an evaluation of the position on the fly, without having an engine running in the background.

To see that displayed, simply click on any piece on the board for the side which is just about to move. The evaluation is immediately shown as text by the program, e.g. “Black is clearly better” etc.
